Laurie Strode struggles to come to terms with her brother Michael's deadly return to Haddonfield, Illinois; meanwhile, Michael prepares for another reunion with his sister.
Director Rob Zombie cheerfully embraces such sadism, of course. All of his films possess the same grimy sheen as this one, and to his credit, he truly seems to love it rather than treating it like an affectation to scare money out of jaded teenagers. Furthermore, he uses Halloween II to explore a notion rarely seen in horror films: the lingering psychological trauma of the first movie's survivors. Other horror sequels have done better on that front (Aliens and Scream 2 come to mind), but there are worse examples to emulate, and Zombie follows through on his commitments with resolute enthusiasm. That doesn't make the process of watching it any less depressing.
